UPRIGHT MONUMENTS

Upright monuments are vertical cemetery memorials that sit above a grave upon a granite base and foundation. They vary greatly in shape and size, and allow plenty of space for personalization and artwork.

Flat markers are usually made from a slab of granite and are set directly into the ground. Because most of the sides are surrounded by earth, only the top surface needs to be polished. Flat markers may be the only type of memorial allowed by some cemeteries because they make it easier to maintain the grounds and graves. Despite their simplicity, there are still many ways to customize and personalize this type of memorial.

The overall size of a memorial is limited only by budget and the rules and regulations of the cemetery. Depending on the rules of the cemetery, lawn-level markers can be placed at either the foot or the head of the lot, though individual lawn-level memorials are customarily placed at the foot of the lot.
